Success Story

Revitalizing ACI Infrastructure for Long-Term Stability & Zero-Downtime Modernization

A state government department engaged Gruve to assess and stabilize two aging Cisco ACI sites facing hardware end-of-life, software limitations, and critical misconfigurations. Gruve delivered a clear remediation path, performed a full hardware refresh, corrected multiple configuration issues, and enabled a future-proof environment, all completed with zero downtime.

  • Corrected multiple misconfigurations impacting fabric reliability

  • Reduced risk of network device failure, improving continuity

  • Established a future-proof ACI foundation for the next 5–7 years

  • Delivered a full hardware refresh with no service interruption

About the client

A state-level government department operating critical public-service systems across multiple facilities. Their network infrastructure underpins essential operations, requiring maximum uptime, predictable performance, and secure, compliant modernization.

Challenges

The client managed two independent ACI sites built on Gen-1 hardware running ACI 4.0 code, which no longer had a supported upgrade path. Several high-impact issues were identified, including:

  • End-of-Life/End-of-Support APIC, spine, and leaf hardware
  • Port-local VLAN misconfigurations
  • Overlapping internal TEP pools impacting ACI application TEP pools
  • These limitations created risk, reduced reliability, and blocked any safe path to modernization.

Solutions

TEP Pool Remediation:

Resolved overlapping TEP pool conflicts by altering internal ACI App IP and disabling affected services.

Port VLAN Redesign:

Corrected port-local misconfigurations through a complete redefinition of VLAN pools, domains, and AEPs.

Code & Hardware Modernization Path:

Mapped a safe and strategic upgrade route by replacing unsupported hardware, upgrading APICs, and refreshing all spine and leaf devices.

Comprehensive Fabric Refresh:

Executed a full hardware replacement strategy ensuring stability, visibility, and long-term platform viability.

Results

Gruve delivered a stabilized, modernized, and fully supported ACI environment that the client can rely on for years ahead. By eliminating unsupported hardware, correcting foundational misconfigurations, and applying the latest code versions, the department now benefits from greater security, improved operational continuity, and increased confidence in their mission-critical infrastructure. Most notably, the entire hardware refresh and remediation effort was achieved with zero downtime, maintaining uninterrupted public-service operations.
